Extremely expensive - training scientists & staff - facilities and equipment cost huge amounts 1. Cheaper to train workers - doctors, teachers, police cost less than astronauts 2. No benefit for normal people - simply vanity projects for politicians 2. Direct positive impacts on daily life - public services benefit everyone directly- people could be lifted out of poverty 3. Dangerous & missions fail - small errors can cost lives - e.g. Challenger space shuttle disaster 📝 Full Band 9 Essay (275 words) # The money spent by governments on space programmes would be better spent on vital public services such as schools and hospitals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Governments in some countries spend large amounts of money on space exploration programmes. I completely agree with the idea that these are a waste of money, and that the funds should be allocated to public services.
There are several reasons why space programmes should be abandoned. Firstly, it is extremely expensive to train scientists and other staff involved with space missions, and facilities and equipment also come at a huge cost to the government. Secondly, these programmes do not benefit normal people in our daily lives; they are simply vanity projects for politicians. Finally, many missions to space fail completely, and the smallest technological error can cost astronauts their lives. The Challenger space shuttle disaster showed us that space travel is extremely dangerous, and in my opinion it is not worth the risk.
I believe that the money from space programmes should go to vital public services instead. It is much cheaper to train doctors, teachers, police and other public service workers than it is to train astronauts or the scientists and engineers who work on space exploration projects. Furthermore, public servants do jobs that have a positive impact on every member of society. For example, we all use schools, hospitals and roads, and we all need the security that the police provide. If governments reallocated the money spent on space travel and research, many thousands of people could be lifted out of poverty or given a better quality of life.
In conclusion, my view is that governments should spend money on services that benefit all members of society, and it is wrong to waste resources on projects that do not improve our everyday lives.
📚 High-band Topic Vocabulary # Category Vocabulary Space-related space exploration, space programmes, space missions, space travel, space shuttle disaster Government & Funding funds, allocated, reallocated, public services, vital public services, come at a huge cost, waste resources Negative Connotations abandoned, vanity projects, cost astronauts their lives, technological error Positive Impact positive impact, lifted out of poverty, quality of life, public service workers, public servants, everyday lives Note 在寫作中靈活運用同義詞，能有效提升 Lexical Resource 的分數。
💡 Key Takeaway # Tip Opinion Essay 的三大關鍵：
辨識題型 — 確認題目問的是 your opinion 明確立場 — 從 Introduction 到 Conclusion 保持一致 使用 “I” — 直接說 I agree / I disagree / In my opinion Note 不要期望一次就熟練這個技巧，這需要大量練習。多做幾次規劃練習，你會越來越得心應手。

A concise breakdown of the essential strategies for Academic Writing Task 2 Opinion essays, covering question identification, clear opinion expression, and essay structure.
🎯 The Core Concept # Spend10 minutes planning your Task 2 essay. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Plan with keywords (3 ideas against compulsory service):
School timetable is already full, no time for community service Students’ work in other subjects would be affected Teenagers might not want to do it (reluctant, no motivation) With these 3 ideas written down, it is easy to see they are distinct ideas, and “Firstly, Secondly, Finally” fits perfectly. We can add a topic sentence like this:
(Topic sentence) Disagree for several reasons Main Body Paragraph:
There are several reasons why I would argue against having compulsory community service for secondary school students. Firstly, the school curriculum is already full with important academic subjects, such as maths, science and languages. For example, I remember having an extremely busy timetable when I was at high school, and it would not have been possible to add to it. Secondly, students’ performance in other subjects would be affected if valuable study time were taken by charity work or neighbourhood improvement schemes. Finally, I believe that teenage students would be reluctant to take part in any programme of obligatory work, and this could lead to poor motivation and even bad behaviour.
Tip Topic sentence (第一句): 明確指出本段的論點。 Firstly (第二句): 提出第一個理由（課表已滿）。 Example (第三句): 用個人經歷作為例子支持第一個理由。 Secondly (第四句): 提出第二個理由（影響其他科目成績）。 Finally (第五句): 提出第三個理由（學生缺乏動力，及影響操行）。 Plan with keywords (one main idea):
voluntary (not compulsory) community service is positive students are more motivated if they can choose gain work experience, self-confidence, skills good for CVs, career, university admissions, employers This plan is about ONE point – why is voluntary community service is so beneficial (深入發展單一觀點). This means it will fit the “Idea, Explain, Example” method.
Main Body Paragraph:
On the other hand, the opportunity to do voluntary community service could be extremely positive for high school students. By making these programmes optional, schools would ensure that only motivated students took part. These young people would gain valuable experience in an adult working environment, which could help to build their self-confidence and enhance their skills. Having such experience and skills on their CVs could greatly improve school leavers’ career prospects. For example, a period of voluntary work experience might impress a university admissions officer or a future employer.
Tip Idea (想法) — 第一句: 提出核心觀點（自願社區服務有正面意義）。 Explain (解釋) — 第二至四句: 詳細解釋為什麼自願服務有益（只吸引有動機的學生 → 獲得經驗和技能 → 提升就業前景）。 Example (例子) — 第五句: 用具體例子支持（如大學入學官或雇主會印象深刻）。 🔑 Vocabulary vs. Linking Words (詞彙 vs. 連接詞) # Important Linking words DO NOT increase your vocabulary score. 連接詞（如 firstly, secondly）本身不會提高你的詞彙分數。 像 this / these / their / such 這樣的詞，通過指代前文內容來發揮連接作用，是必學技巧。
Type Purpose Examples Linking words (連接詞) Help the reader follow your logic (不需要用複雜的連詞) firstly, secondlly, finally, for example, on the other hand Topic vocabulary (主題詞彙) Show the examiner your range of specific, high-quality words related to the question (提升詞彙分數) compulsory, curriculum, performance, reluctant, self-confidence, career prospects 📊 Which Method to Use? # Question Type Recommended Method (建議方法) Discussion 一方觀點用 Method 1 列舉原因，另一方用 Method 2 深入發展 Opinion Method 1 列舉不同意/同意的理由；或 Method 2 深入發展一個核心論點 Problem & Solution Method 1 列舉問題的原因；Method 2 深入發展解決方案 Two-Part Question Method 1 列舉回答第一個問題的原因；Method 2 深入回答第二個問題 🚫 What NOT to Do # Don’t write more than one core idea per paragraph (每段只需寫一個核心觀點): Development and depth is more important. Write at least 150 words.
(Source: IELTS Simon Video Course Writing Task 1 Lesson 2 Line Graphs)
🏆 The Essay # Introduction (引言) # The line graph compares the amount of electricity produced in France using four different sources of power over a period of 32 years.
Overview (概述) # It is clear that nuclear power was by far the most important means of electricity generation over the period shown. Renewables provided the lowest amount of electricity in each year.
Body Paragraph 1 (細節段落 1) # In 1980, thermal power stations were the main source of electricity in France, generating around 120 terawatt hours of power. Nuclear and hydroelectric power stations produced just under 75 terawatt hours of electricity each, and renewables provided a negligible amount.
Just one year later, nuclear power overtook thermal power as the primary source of electricity. Between 1980 and 2005, electricity production from nuclear power rose dramatically to a peak of 430 terawatt hours.
Body Paragraph 2 (細節段落 2) # By contrast, the figure for thermal power fell to only 50 terawatt hours in 1985, and remained at this level for the rest of the period. Hydroelectric power generation remained relatively stable, at between 50 and 80 terawatt hours, for the whole 32-year period, but renewable electricity production saw only a small rise to approximately 25 terawatt hours by 2012.
🔑 Collocations & Vocabulary (亮點單字與片語) # Means of electricity generation: 發電方式 Negligible amount: 微不足道的數量 Overtook: 超越（描述數據交叉必備） Rose dramatically to a peak of…: 急劇上升至…的頂峰 Remained relatively stable: 保持相對穩定 💡 The Strategy (線圖解題 4 步曲) # 1. 📝 Paraphrase (改寫題目) # 寫 Introduction 就是改寫題目，一句即可。運用替換詞彙將題目重新包裝，並精準點出圖表的主軸與時間範圍。
高分句型： The line graph illustrates / compares the changes in... over the period of [X] years. 2. 🌟 Overview (找出全貌與核心趨勢) # Overview 是 Task 1 的關鍵！一共兩句。總結圖表中的最大趨勢（例如：整體上升、下降或波動）。
高分句型： Overall, it is clear that... witnessed an upward trend, while... experienced a significant decrease. 3.
A four-step IELTS line graph guide with IELTS Simon’s Band 9 sample essay and essential high-scoring collocations.
🎯 The Core Concept # Task 1 is a factual report, not an essay. The proportion of ... more than doubled over the decade. ... fluctuated slightly between 2018 and 2022, then dropped sharply. 🚫 What NOT to Do # ❌ Wrong ✅ Correct Remarks 寫個人觀點 (“I think…”) 只寫事實描述 不要寫觀點 寫結論段 (“In conclusion…”) 寫概述段 (“Overall…”) 小作文不需要結論 逐條羅列所有數字 選代表性數據 + 比較 不要變成「流水帳」 分開描述每個項目 將相關數據擺埋一齊比較 一定要有比較意識 💡 Key Takeaway # Paraphrase the question → Spot 2 main trends → Group data into 2 logical paragraphs. No opinions. No conclusion.
改寫題目 → 抓出兩大趨勢 → 數據分兩組描述；不寫觀點，不寫結論。
A concise breakdown of how to tackle Academic Writing Task 1, covering the 4-paragraph structure, 6 question types, and essential rules.
IELTS Writing Task 1 - The 4-Paragraph Method
posts
Hello!
